Cold Weather Sailing

As we all know, the weather in Central Texas can vary dramatically during the Winter... one weekend can be 70 degrees and sunny and the next weekend can bring freezing rain. If the wind-chill factor is below freezing, we will not race (but anything above that is fair game :-) Please bring warm clothes as conditions warrant. If the winds are above 10 knots you may get splashed with water. If the winds are above 15 knots, you will get splashed :-) Getting splashed with water in the Summer is a blast!!, but getting splashed in the Winter can ruin your day if you don't have the proper gear. If the temperature is below 50 degrees you will need proper clothing to stay warm. If you have sailing "foulies" (foul weather gear) don't leave home without them :-) If you have snowboarding or skiing clothes, these would be a good substitute for cold days. If there is the possibility of lightning we will not go sailing (but mere rain in the forecast is fair game :-) If you don't have "foulies" or skiing clothes, and if the weather calls for rain, and if you really want to go sailing anyways, then an inexpensive rainsuit will keep you dry (get the type with overalls with suspenders and a separate jacket instead of the "poncho" style). An extra set of dry clothes would be a good thing to bring in case of rain. If the temperature is below 50 degrees, and if there is a chance of rain, and if you have none of the above then it would not be a good idea to go sailing.

Hot Weather Sailing

As discussed above, the weather in Central Texas can vary dramatically during the Winter... not so much during the Summer ;-) Whereas we never know what the weather will bring during the Winter, we are pretty much 100% certain that we know what the weather will bring during the Summer... and that is HOT, HOT, HOT! But that doesn't mean you need to suffer through the heat, and being prepared is your first line of defense! Please bring a hat, please bring sunglasses, please bring sunscreen, and please bring FLUIDS to drink, and, by the way ALCOHOL does not count! Yes, of course you can bring your favorite alcoholic beverage for yourself and to share with your friends, and of course you can drink your favorite beverage as long as you abide by Texas State laws, but alcohol impairs your body's ability to DEAL with the heat (DISCLAIMER: Sorry, we don't want to sound like your mother, but we don't want to have to take you to the Emergency Room suffering from Heat Stroke either because that can be a life-threatening condition. If at any time you *DO* feel too hot and/or dizzy, please tell your skipper to be dropped off at the dock and seek shade and/or air conditioning.) The best way to fight the heat is WATER!!! And as sailors we are fortunate that the solution is all around us!!! If there is no wind, we will likely jump in the lake to cool off, so please bring a swimsuit and a dry set of clothes to change into. During the summer I personally like to wear quick-dry clothing, and if the weather is hot, I will soak my hat and shirt in the water. So please bring a swimsuit or other clothing you don't mind getting wet and please bring a dry change of clothes.
